News of the Week:
   DeafDigest dedicates this edition to
Darwin J. Holmes, West Palm Beach, Florida,
who departed us.
While well known in Florida, though not
nationally, Darwin was a man of diverse and
interesting backgrounds.
He was a leader with the Deaf Ministry,
a master carpenter, a Sportsman, an activist,
an adventurer, and even a builder of a
unique vehicle that graced the cover of the
Deaf American years way back.
When we see these off-shore vehicles, we
would realize Darwin was years ahead of these
brilliant vehicle designers!
Thank you, Darwin, for brightening the
lives of Deaf Floridians.

A PHRASE REPLACEMENT
A British newspaper wrote about a deaf person and
mentioned him as "deaf and dumb."
The next day, this newspaper issued a correction,
saying the deaf person should be mentioned as
"deaf and speech-impaired."
This is interesting. But what if the deaf person
has perfect speech? Should he be described as
"deaf and speech-perfect"?
Aw, what is so wrong about just writing him
as "deaf"?

service, the same as we, the Americans do.
A recent survey in Australia found that the
Northern Territory deaf residents use their own relay
less as compared to other deaf residents elsewhere

Why? Could be many reasons (language difficulties,
apathy, lack of knowledge, lack of TTY machines, etc)

THE NORTH POLE: THE FIRST OR THE ONLY SYNDROME
There was a story of a mixed group of deaf and
hearing British people that reached the North Pole.
The story quoted a deaf woman as claiming that
her group of deaf people are the first to reach
the North Pole.
Maybe she is right. Maybe she is not. How do
we know who was the first deaf to reach the
North Pole?
Same old "first or the only" syndrome.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Snap!VRS Launches New VRS Speed Dial Feature

Customers Can Use Ojo Keypad to Enter the Telephone Number for
the Snap!VRS Interpreter to Dial

Pearl River, NY - April 28, 2008 - Snap!VRS, the video relay
services provider that distributes the Ojo video phone, today
announced the launch of its new VRS speed dial feature.  This
new feature allows customers to use the Ojo keypad to enter in
a telephone number and have it automatically display for the
Snap!VRS interpreter to dial as soon as the call is connected.
This reduces the VRS call setup time by eliminating the need
for customers to sign the individual telephone numbers to the
interpreter.

"By launching VRS speed dial, Snap!VRS aims to provide customers
with a more convenient VRS call experience," said Richard
Schatzberg, Snap!VRS Chief Executive Officer.  "The technology
behind VRS speed dial enables an even faster connection with
Snap!VRS interpreters."

All Ojos that have already been distributed by Snap!VRS will be
enabled with the VRS speed dial feature in next 24 hours in the
form of a software upgrade by way of a remote download. However,
in order to receive the download, customers need to make sure
their Ojo is successfully connected to the Internet. All future
Ojos distributed by Snap!VRS will be shipped with VRS speed dial
already enabled.

When ready to place a VRS call, customers first select the
one-touch "Snap!VRS 711" button on the Ojo main menu screen.  A
small window then appears and prompts the customer to enter the
telephone number for the Snap!VRS interpreter.  The customer is
then connected to a Snap!VRS interpreter who already has the
telephone number and is ready to complete the call.

VRS speed dial also allows customers to store entries for
frequent callers in the Ojo phonebook.  Upon selecting the
entry, the Ojo automatically dials Snap!VRS and provides the
interpreter with the telephone number of the person to call.

http://www.snapvrs.com

About Snap!VRS:
Snap!VRS is a video relay service that enables people who are
deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired to improve the
connection with people in their personal and business lives.
Eligible applicants receive a free Ojo video phone and use it
to conduct true-to-life video relay calls through qualified
sign language interpreters over a high-speed Internet
connection. Customers communicate with the interpreter using
sign language while the interpreter simultaneously relays the
comments in spoken English to the standard telephone user. To

OUR DEAF CYBERCEMETERY
The federal government has a cybercemetery, which is
a new buzzword. It means websites that have stopped
operations, and yes, there are many closed government
websites.
We, the deaf, have our own Cybercemetery, with our
long list of closed deaf websites. In the mid-nineties,
there were three pioneering deaf websites, each
highly acclaimed. And each have been, long since
then, closed up!

LOOKING AT THINGS FROM A POINT OF VIEW
We tend to look at things from a point of
view.
A physicist would go to an amusement park
and look at these gravity-defying rides from
a physics point of view.
An architect would tour these Roman ruins
during his vacation and look at these buildings
from an architect's point of view.
A restauranteur would watch one food show
on one of these cable programs and look at
these ingredients from a chef's point of
view.
This applies to us, the deaf. We look
on things in every day life from a deaf
person's point of view.

MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF

- Eleanor Roosevelt (past First Lady, President Franklin
Delano Roosevelt)

She, and her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt launched
the Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Disability Award,
in conjunction with the UN's 50th anniversary on
October 24, 1995.

A past recipient of the award was the Association for the
Welfare of the Deaf and the Blind in Poland

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

when the hearing person in the audience suddenly
stops the interpreter, and says:

please let the deaf person read my lips

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Every stenocaptioner's personal computer dictionary consists
of tens of thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands of
entries.  Many captioners began the process of building their
dictionary by sitting down with some sort of dictionary building
kit, and they stroked out word by word the entries they wanted in
their dictionary.

Many of these kits contain the English word entries, and the
captioner would then stroke the steno to tell the computer exactly
how that captioner would write these particular words.

A person cannot begin work as a captioner until he or she has a
dictionary consisting of many thousands of words.  Many captioners
started out as court reporters and were able to add entries to their
dictionaries throughout their years of court reporting.

In more recent years, some court reporting/captioning schools are
offering the students assistance in building their personal
dictionaries.

DEAF SENTENCE, CONTINUED

Last week's DeafDigest ran an article
titled "Living under a deaf sentence" which
concerns late-deafened individuals unwilling
to accept their deafness.
And strangely enough this same phrase
"Deaf Sentence" resurfaced this week, though
under a different meaning.
It is a newly published novel, titled "Deaf
Sentence" by David Lodge. Interestingly it
seems to have nothing to do with the deaf or
of deafness. It focuses on a retired gentleman
unable to deal with his retirement.
Why "deaf"? Perhaps "deaf" to reality?

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

NAD deaf attorney Kelby Brick was mentioned in the popular
Bob Levey column in the April 25th edition of the Washington
Post.
Columnist Levey raised the issue of hands-free driving
(no reference to the deaf however) of drivers busy
with non-driving chores while driving.
Kelby stressed that no driving guidelines prohibit
deaf drivers from communicating while driving and that
"deafness is a source of safety."

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

All teams in the National Football League need to
sign a contract with the ASLTA (American Sign Language
Teachers Association).
The contract would provide all NFL teams with a
crash course in simple ASL gestures.
The purpose is to communicate in the team war rooms
on NFL draft day. Team executives (owners, presidents,
general managers, etc) are forever on the phones
trying to arrange trades with other teams. And during
the haggling over trade terms, these officials are
afraid that background voices would be overheard
by other teams on other phones. You see, as many as
half dozen phone lines are busy, being used by as many
as half dozen team executives!
These executives were communicating with each other
with crude gestures, which could be easily misunderstood.
Hence the need for formalized ASL gestures!
