If you are deaf and root for your favorite
big-time college athletic team, you will notice
that many teams wear uniforms adorned with logos
of such sponsors like Nike, Reebok and Under
Armour.
You may also wonder why Gallaudet are not
given these sponsorships and assume these
corporations do not care about these non-scholarship
lower level athletic programs.
This is a wrong assumption. It was announced
this week that adidas (lower case, not upper case)
will be providing uniforms for the Gallaudet teams
first in basketball, football and volleyball. And
in due time, the other Gallaudet sports. The
soccer teams are already wearing these adidias.
Always great when huge corporations consider
Gallaudet to be important part of their marketing
campaigns.

A DEAF COMPUTER TRAINER AT A COMPUTER STORE
At a computer store in Northern Virginia,
there is a deaf woman who is employed as a
trainer.
She teaches customers how to operate their
newly purchased computers.
Said an observer:
I was just watching her train some hearing
people by using ASL gestures and facial
expressions and with a little typing.
She is good.

COULD THE DEAF PLAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL?
There were several newspaper stories in Kentucky
praising Terry Clayton, who is deaf for playing football
for University of Kentucky.
One story was titled:
The fact that Clayton played college football is a story
in itself
DeafDigest does not understand why the story was
written up in that tone. It implies that it is amazing
that a deaf person could play college football!
Gallaudet University has been fielding football
teams since 1883. And we have seen two deaf and one
hard of hearing players in the NFL in the past.
And only this past season, Martel Van Zant was a
great defensive back for Oklahoma State University.
He would have been drafted last week except that he
suffered a season-ending leg injury that scared
off the NFL teams.
A SUCCESSFUL DEAF BEAUTICIAN
Runi Bisoi, a deaf resident of Katara, in a remote
part of India, is the town's most successful
beautician.
She is heavily in demand by patrons in the beauty
parlor. They all ask for her when they enter the
parlor.
A year ago, she was seeking employment. But once
she got her foot in the door, she was a quick
learner, and a better performer than other beauticians
in her shop.
DISRESPECTING GALLAUDET OR A JOKE?
The Cornell University student newspaper web page
ran a piece, intended to be a joke. It reads as
follows:
Former Managing editor Mike Morisy unable to pass
the Arts and Sciences language requirement, in large
part due to Sun commitments, and being forced to attend
Gallaudet University (a school for the deaf) over the
summer in order to receive his diploma. Mike hears
perfectly, despite what he might tell you.
DeafDigest editor does not like this joke.
After all it was Cornell University that made a
huge contribution to the legacy of Gallaudet
University. How and why?
- Dr William Stokoe who recognized ASL as a
legitimate language, is a Cornell graduate
- Dr George Detmold, the Gallaudet Dean
(known as provost in these early days),
helped Gallaudet earn accreditation for
the first time in history; he also upgraded
the quality of theatrical plays as performed
by Gallaudet actors. Not only he graduated
from Cornell but taught classes there
before moving on to Gallaudet
- Dr Leonard Siger was considered to be
one of the best teachers of English
at Gallaudet during the early sixties.
Like with Detmold and Stokoe, he is a
Cornell graduate.
CAN OR CAN'T
A newspaper story was written up like this:
he is completely deaf in his right ear; he
still can hear from that side
Trying to figure that out. Apparently he
can hear with a hearing aid or with a CI,
a fact not mentioned by the newspaper writer!
A FRUSTRATED EX-ORALIST'S FRAMED CONVERSATION
A DeafDigest subscriber, himself a frustrated
ex-oralist, who fully embraces ASL, said his
childhood was an ordeal.
His father was continuously insistent on
proper pronunciation of every uttered word.
The conversation was one-sided; everything
he said was framed; the father, ignoring the
contents of the conversation and instead,
focusing on correct pronuncations.
It did not matter if the there was a tone
of urgency to the conversation, the father
would still tune out the contents.
This framed conversation was what drove
the deaf child batty.
DEAF/LATE DEAFENED POPULATION IN MINNESOTA
Some one mentioned on a blog that there are
500,000 residents of Minnesota that are deaf
and hard of hearing. Minnesota has approximately
5,000,000 people, so we are talking about
ten percent
Is this math valid? One research study
said that one of every 150 people are hearing
impaired; another research study said that
nearly 9 percent are hearing impaired.
Which math is valid? It is comparing
apples with oranges.
SECTION 504 - STILL CONFUSING AS EVER
Let us compare Section 504 with postal
service mailing rules.
Many corporations hire full time attorneys
or full time mail room experts just to specialize
in postal service mailing rules, and to look
for loopholes that will help cut mailing rates.
Not quite that so with Section 504. Many
people are still confused with exactly how
Section 504 applies to disabled people, the
deaf included.
And keep in mind Section 504, enacted in
1973, is 35 years old! The older the law
becomes, the more confusing it gets!
When a school is confused, then attorneys
should be hired just to specialize in these
regulations. But it does not work that way.
Exact what is Section 504? Go to:
REASON TO POSE AS A DEAF PERSON
When a hearing person poses as a deaf person,
it is for a reason.
The reason may be the need to beg for money,
or to pull a prank or to avoid arrest by the
police or as in the case of people of Iraq,
to survive!
The warring tribes of Iraq are less likely
to shoot known deaf people.
TO DECLARE OR TO DIAGNOSE
In a newspaper story, the doctor was written up as
declaring the child to be profoundly deaf.
To declare a child as deaf seems to be a strange
way of describing the story. The correct phrase should
be read as this -
the doctor diagnosed the child to be profoundly deaf
The word declare is technically correct if one
looks up a dictionary, yet it makes the story
look so harsh.

Wish List of the Week:
that the very impoverished Exxon Mobile, crying and
whining over its "disappointing" 10.9 bil (not mil)
quarterly profit, would distribute its wealth among
all educational programs for the deaf and all social
service programs for the deaf!
....
DeafHistory - Looking Back:
Circa 1880 - Maryland School for the Deaf was very important
to Frederick, MD, as it was the town's largest employer!
In these days, Frederick was a sleepy, cow pasture town,
and MSD was the "biggest" kid on the block.
Not any more these days; Frederick is part of the
Baltimore-Washington megalopolis.
...
Deaf Alternative History - What if:
Past Oklahoma State and current LSU football
coach Les Miles was not familiar with the deaf?
Miles has a deaf brother, and therefore was
familiar with the needs of the deaf. When
Martel Van Zant surfaced as a hot high school
football prospect, the coach was only too glad
to recruit him.
What if Miles had a hearing brother? Would he
show reluctance towards recruiting Van Zant?
Very possibly!
Van Zant incidentally was not drafted by the
NFL last week, mostly because of his
season-ending injury on the football field.
He is hoping to get a contract either in Arena
Football or in Canadian Football League.
...
Deaf and the Money:
Despite the financial mess these days, do we have
deaf individuals that help with loans that help deaf
people purchase houses?
Yes. One DeafDigest advertiser, Kramer Financial, helps
with these house purchases. Go back up near the top of this
edition and look for the ad titled "Watch out for ARMS"
...
DeafNumbers of the Week:
According to an official affiliated with the
Association of Medical Professionals With Hearing Losses
we have about 30 deaf individuals that are physicians
or are currently in medical schools. The numbers are not
just only in USA but elsewhere.

Year 1998 - Just as when the USA Deaf Sports Federation was
lobbying to win full funding rights by the US Olympic Commission,
the US Paralympics group sabotaged the funding efforts. They
submitted a secret amendment to the Amateur Sports Act of
1978 without consulting the congress and the deaf group!
